West White Rose Operations Transition Supported by MTL

Recently, our colleague Ruairidh Hardy visited the West White Rose platform during a key phase as it transitions into operations—marking the culmination of a complex and rewarding project for the wider MTL team.

During the early integrity review phase, it became clear that management and assurance around the installation operating weight would be needed throughout the installation’s operating life. To address this and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, MTL developed a robust weight control procedure, with Ruairidh playing a key role throughout.

What began as a detailed review of extensive design documentation—including evolving topsides weight reports—became a critical bridge between project delivery and operations during the handover phase. From this, a practical and compliant weight control procedure was developed to support offshore teams in day-to-day operations.

However, the platform presented unique challenges, including significant variable weights and a moving drilling derrick, meaning no existing system could meet requirements. As a result, MTL led the development of a bespoke solution, defining the proof of concept and functional requirements for a new operational weight management system.

Working closely with developers and client stakeholders, Ruairidh, as project lead, helped guide the system from concept through to implementation—building on prior experience at a much larger scale.

As the platform moves into operations, MTL continues to support Cenovus through system rollout, offshore engagement and training. As part of the handover, Ruairidh also travelled offshore to conduct a baseline weight audit, ensuring alignment between design data and actual platform conditions.

This project highlights the value of combining engineering expertise with the development of bespoke systems—supporting safe and efficient operations throughout the asset’s lifecycle.
