MTL recently brought industry professionals together to discuss one of the most technically demanding challenges in our field: welding against water backing.
We are delighted to report that our recent technical session on Water-Backed Welding was a resounding success. The event provided a platform to dive deep into the procedural requirements, and practical solutions necessary to ensure weld integrity in these difficult environments.

The Challenge of the “Heat Sink”
Welding directly against water (or any liquid backing) creates a rapid cooling effect that significantly alters the metallurgy of the weld. Without precise controls, this “heat sink” effect can lead to hardness issues and hydrogen cracking.
During the session, we explored how to mitigate these risks, moving beyond theory into practical application. Key discussion points included:
- Procedure Qualification: Navigating the rigorous standards required to qualify a procedure for water-backed scenarios.
- Replicating Cooling Rates: The critical importance of simulating accurate cooling and flow rates during the qualification phase to ensure they match the reality of the on-site environment.
- On-Site Implementation: Bridging the gap between the fab shop and the field, ensuring that the control measures developed during qualification are strictly adhered to during execution.

A Community of Experts
We would like to extend a huge thank you to all who attended. The success of the event was driven by your high level of engagement.
The insightful questions raised during the Q&A session highlighted the shared commitment across our industry to ensuring safety and quality. It was invaluable to discuss real-world scenarios and share knowledge on how best to tackle these challenges.
Looking Ahead
At MTL, we are committed to sharing knowledge and driving standards forward. If you missed this event but have questions regarding water-backed welding or procedure qualification, please do not hesitate to reach out to our technical team.
