Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

Key to MTL’s position as a leading provider of FPSO hull structural and marine solutions, is our team of highly skilled Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. With extensive FPSO and tanker building and maintenance experience, the MTL engineering team have a good understanding of the issues experienced and are able to offer through-life service, optimising your FPSO Integrity Strategy from cradle to grave.

MTL understand requirements of Class and work closely with Class surveyors to ensure approval.

MTL are fully conversant with IACS unified requirements and the rules published by all the main Classification Societies. The MTL team can support FPSO operators in developing repair solutions and inspection plans which meet the requirements of Class and optimise offshore efficiency.

Scoping and guiding work, reviewing and interpreting results.

MTL can facilitate detailed analysis including strength and fatigue analysis, hydrodynamic analysis and Finite Element Analysis. MTL will define analysis work scopes and manage the selection and supervision of analysis contractors. MTL is not an analysis company, but our involvement in helping to guide and interpret the results of the analysis can bring great value and cost savings to an FPSO owner/operator.

Intuitive repair specifications, hotwork and coldwork.

With over 12 years of experience of developing repair specifications for maintaining FPSO structures on-station, MTL has become a specialist in this area. Our repair specifications are developed based on a sound understanding of the offshore construction techniques available, typical repairs carried out on ageing tankers, the limitations of carrying out repairs in production and the requirements of the Classification Society rules such that a “fit for purpose” solution is delivered.

Risk based, considering consequence and rate of deterioration.

We have vast experience in assessing anomaly data and have developed a unique method of presenting the essential data at a glance to enable asset integrity managers and technical authorities to interpret the data make informed decisions.

Our knowledge of managing the inspection findings and re-inspections of thousands of anomalies over several inspection cycles means that we can make informed decisions about the rate of deterioration and risk which can then be used as part of the overall integrity management process.

anomaly assessment

Functional specifications, product awareness and limitations.

Whilst MTL is not a fabric maintenance company, we have a knowledge of the application of hull coatings, surface preparation, coatings maintenance, assessment and repair which can bring great value to FPSO operations. Early coating systems failures due to sharp edges, poor surface preparation, salt contamination, exceeding overcoating times and traffic damage are not uncommon. We have the experience to be able to predict where coating failures are likely to be found and to specify what repair methods would be most appropriate to suit the remaining service life of the unit.

Marine systems, hazardous area equipment

Our team of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers have a sound knowledge of all marine equipment and systems, built upon the experience of carrying out Class inspections, acting as Drydock Marine Superintendents for tankers and from carrying out life extension assessments of these systems.
