Safety is integral to everything we do at MTL. Working within the confined spaces of hull structures is not without its challenges, but we have developed new ways of working to ensure the safest operations. We have a clear understanding of the risks associated with our work and our careful planning and bespoke software and systems of work mean we have safely and successfully executed extensive marine projects while on station and during production, under the scrutiny of safety professionals and regulators.
Matt is a Degree qualified Naval Architect who has worked for a Classification Society as a Surveyor undertaking detailed structural analysis and field surveys. He also worked for an oil major providing technical support to a fleet of aging tankers and was involved in newbuilding projects for a shuttle tanker and ULCC’s. Since moving into the offshore field, he has acted as Technical Authority for hull structures and marine systems for a number of Operators. Matt recently stepped down as Chairman of the Lloyd’s Register Offshore Rules Technical Committee, a position he held for over ten years. Since founding MTL, Matt has worked to develop robust processes to support operators of newbuild and in-service FPSO by developing processes to align Risk Based Inspection strategies to bridge the gap between operational needs and more traditional Class based approaches.
Calum is a Mechanical Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the Oil and Gas industry, including working for operator organisations. Since founding MTL, Calum has applied his extensive engineering experience to developing innovative solutions for executing structural repairs on board operational FPSOs. A fundamental cornerstone to this has been the development of MTL’s Safe System of work equipment, which offers a step change in safely managing confined space entry and enables hot work repairs to be carried out in tanks, whilst an FPSO remains in production.
Ian joined Marine Technical Limits in 2017 to the position of Lead Naval Architect, responsible for managing the naval architecture team and the work it performs. Ian is a Chartered Naval Architect, having started in the shipyards in Glasgow, and for the past 11 years with marine and offshore engineering consultancies. Ian has a diverse technical background covering offshore mooring systems, vessel stability, structures, marine operational procedures, and Marine Warranty Surveying (MWS). It’s in the field of MWS that Ian specialises, having project managed several MWS scopes for significant field development construction projects, and is excited to be leading MTL into this arena.
Chris’s background has been as Classification Society Surveyor working on newbuilding and existing ship projects around the world for a number of years, before settling in Aberdeen where he was involved in all aspects of Classification and IVB work for a number of Clients on floating and fixed assets. Since joining MTL Chris has been supporting many of our inspection and repair projects regularly providing leadership to inspection and repair teams offshore.
Prior to joining MTL, Viorel’s experience was gained working in shipyards and as a Superintendent for a fleet management company looking after a number of ageing vessels. Viorel’s duties include the management of integrity management strategies developed for FPSO’s operating in the UKCS and East Coast Canada. Viorel has also let major upgrade programs to hull structures and marine systems including modifying ballast tanks to cargo tanks on existing FPSO’s. Viorel is often leading inspection and repair teams offshore.
Adam joined the Marine Technical Limits team in 2015, as a Senior Project Engineer responsible for project management of FPSO hull integrity management scopes. Since joining the team, he has overseen a variety of offshore repair scopes and assisted with development of quality management and internal training. Previously working with the North Sea Production Company who operated the North Sea Producer FPSO in the UKCS. He was responsible for execution of hull integrity scopes such as cargo tank cleaning, ROV inspection of ballast tanks (which NSPC won a safety award for in 2014), hot work and coating repairs to cargo and ballast tanks, and in-water survey of the hull structure, amongst other operational projects.
Carys is an archaeologist by training, studying for a BSc in Archaeology and MSc in Paleopathology at Durham University. After briefly working as a field archaeologist, she made the transition to the Oil Industry, joining MTL as a trainee CAD designer. It may not be the most obvious route into the industry, but her forensic attention to detail has proven very useful when deciphering decades old ships drawings. A year after joining MTL, she became CAD Team Lead and currently manages our team of 9 CAD designers.
John joined MTL back in 2011 having previously completing some pieces of work for Matt in the early days of MTL. He is responsible for IT systems and full life-cycle software development for internal and commercial products. He currently leads our team of developers who are working on a number of major projects including continuing development of our Integrity Management System, Pyxis and building an in-house ERP system. Working closely with our Naval Architects and Engineers, the team are developing software tools to support and enhance the process of actively and efficiently managing FPSO hull integrity data.
We have a team of construction supervisors and equipment technicians, who between them have over 40 years’ experience working on FPSO integrity and repair projects, in the UKCS, West Africa and Canada. Their construction experience, alongside their safety leadership and knowledge of setting up for and leading FPSO tank entry, is an essential element of delivering on-station scopes safely. Working closely with MTL’s onshore projects team, they have a proven track record of delivering complex repair scopes safely and efficiently.
